Green Hydrogen’s Role in Ireland’s Net Zero Journey
Green Hydrogen has been identified around the world as a key contributor to helping countries meet Net Zero commitments
In January 2022, Wind Energy Ireland published a report setting out the role of green hydrogen in Ireland’s energy transition. This was accompanied by a paper with definitive actions needed to ensure Ireland is seizing our green hydrogen opportunity
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland estimates that Transport accounts for more than 40% of all emissions in Ireland. Government has identified the need to decarbonise this sector, launching the Renewable Fuels Policy Statement in November 2021
In Ireland the Climate Action Plan enshrines a commitment to become carbon Net Zero by 2050, with interim 2030 targets to guide the journey
In July 2022, the Department of Climate, Environment and Communications released a public consultation on developing a hydrogen strategy for Ireland which made reference to Mercury Renewables as a leading developer of green hydrogen in Ireland. The consultation closed in September 2022 and our response can be found here. No firm timeline for delivery of the findings of the consultation or the strategy have been set, however, we expect the DECC to issue a draft hydrogen strategy during the second half of 2023.
